“Remember the Alamo!” or... “Television... Texas Style!” (1966)

Produced by San Antonio’s WOAI-TV, this 1966 industrial film asks the Boston Consulting Group, or BCG, to “Remember the Alamo!” when promoting Avco television stations like WOAI to its business partners. To showcase how the station produces “Television... Texas Style,” the film reviews both staff operations and program offerings. The appeal concludes with testimonials from Texas Governor John Connally and San Antonio Mayor Walter McAllister. Please note: The film ends with the studio set being “invaded” by staff members dressed in sombreros and serapes. The Texas Archive of the Moving Image does not condone this racist framing or cultural appropriation, but presents the film as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as to claim this exploitative behavior never existed. Cultural appropriation involves the adoption of elements of a minority culture by members of a dominant culture without consent. These elements are often trivialized or used outside of their original cultural context, resulting in the loss or distortion of their true meaning. In some instances, cultural appropriation is considered not only disrespectful and offensive but also a form of desecration.
