Follows her weekday work as she cares for four under - a - year - old infants in their baby house from early morning to mid - afternoon and as she takes scheduled breaks to visit her own children in their nearby children's houses. Depicts Hannah's adroit blending of household tasks with tender, expert infant care and upbringing. A survey of the period in U.S. history from 1865 to 1900. Highlights events in the North, including the development of industry, and events in the South, including the actions of the carpetbaggers and scalawags.
