Traces the development of reading from pictography symbols, through the horn books and primers of early American education, to schoolchildren learning phonics. Argues that no matter how quickly children learn to read, they will never read rapidly enough to keep up with the overwhelming quantity of reading material published in this technological world. Suggests that children should be taught to think rapidly rather than to read rapidly.
