Description: Explains that gases of very low density are often encountered in high- altitude flights, in industrial vacuum processes and in laboratory experiments. Shows the evolution of flow fields as density is varied from continuum levels to the rarefield levels of free-molecule flow. Shows the role of the molecular mean-freepath as a natural scale for shock wave thickness and molecular-beam attenuation, and the interaction of free-molecular flows with molecular beams which are made visible by fluorescence and resonant-scattering techniques.
