In 1967, the Puerto Rican Legislative Assembly enacted the Plebiscite Act, enabling a referendum on the island's political status, which resulted in 60.4% of voters choosing the commonwealth option. However, subsequent legislative efforts in the 1970s to address Puerto Rico's status stalled in congressional committees. Additionally, the Partido Estadista Republicano boycotted the referendum, contributing to its decline and the rise of the new Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP).
