Description: Describes the theory of the fusion process and the nature of a plasma. Illustrates a number of experiments, starting with the pinch effect, and considers in detail the instabilities which arise. Considers the thetatron system, followed by magnetic cages and the Phoenix experiment. Warns that although the major instabilities appear to have been overcome, other less violent instabilities may now be revealed.
