[Music] if you had a big brother and you hadn't seen him for six months you'd be just as excited as Jerry and Julie are he's a co-pilot for a big airline that serves South America doesn't he look proud and important he makes such a good impression especially on Jerry and Julie they always have fun when he's home yes the whole family is glad to have David back they think he's just about the best looking young man they've ever seen no wonder see how tall he he stands and how well he carries himself when he walks anyone would like David for a big brother and Jerry and Julie have so much to tell him later that afternoon and here's Julie and me at the beach well you two have certainly grown since I was home last let's show them come on take a look at this this is how tall Jerry was the last time you were home Well you certainly have grown but let me show you something you'd be even taller if you'd Stand Tall what do you mean I mean your posture Jerry could be better yes Jerry's posture can be improved first we must start with a firm foundation with the abdomen here draw in the middle and move your back a little closer to the wall lift your chest and keep your shoulders back separate your shoulders from your hips as much as you can try to hold them up pull the chin straight back raise your head you see that's how tall he really is when he stands correctly let's keep that Mark and not the one from slouching all right it's Julie's turn first a mark to show how tall she stand point the feet straight out you don't want to stand this way or this way but this way with the feet parallel keep your feet well back heels about an inch from the wall wrong hip position may cause a sway back take out just part of the curve not all of it by bringing the middle of the back closer to the wall shoulders square and high no don't hunch them you look much better this way your head is erect with your chin pulled back now one way to remember to stand correctly is to imagine that someone is pulling the hair right here at the back of your head now that'll make you stand tall Walk Tall and even think tall I'll say now when you two grow up you want to have good posture like yours of course we will mhm and that means starting now taking care of yourselves while you're growing up and watching your posture have us all the time next time I come home I want to see you both taller and that means straighter too just as straight as well as here as old lucky and so a few days after David has again left for South America Jerry and Julie are really at work on posture habits they have begun a posture scrapbook almost every day they add a new picture the pictures are all examples of good posture standing and sitting and walking of course David is in the book he is a fine example of good posture Jerry and Julie write something about each picture balance is the secret of good posture good posture is always beautiful sitting properly keeps you alert good posture makes you look important and and as your neighborhood policeman will tell you standing properly also helps keep you from growing tired this nurse who spends most of the day on her feet knows that value of good posture and this salesman knows that when he walks properly he looks well and feels well the whole day long no matter what you grow up to be your appearance your ability to do your job will be improved by by good posture habits right now while you're growing up is the time to develop these posture habits Jerry and Julie keep checking each other to make sure they stand properly to be sure they walk properly and sit properly no matter where they are besides the Scrapbook Jerry and Julie have decided to make some drawings that will show all they have learned learned about sitting and standing and walking they are using lucky as a model to draw from because they can bend him into any position or posture much the way the human body can bend and twist and stretch first they set up Lucky incorrectly here in the sitting position they've certainly made him look bad sprawled feet bad hip position causes sagging spine droop shoulders and head well Julie thinks that's just the way the new boy in her class sits and she's right he certainly has forgotten his posture lesson his head droops his shoulders are slouched forward his hips are too far from the back of the chair his feet are not flat on the floor how much better this looks and how much better it is for the growing body too see how the hips are well back in the seat feet are resting flat on the floor body and head are held erect and her chair and desk are just the right height to help keep this posture this is the alert sensible posture that Jerry draws to show the correct way to sit standing posture is next first Julie poses lucky the wrong way but wait a minute that's no way to stand Julie you have to watch your posture every minute and that goes for you too Jerry that's better we mustn't forget to keep checking each other anyone can team up with a brother or a sister or a friend to check each other's posture and develop good posture habits and now to draw the incorrect standing posture uhoh looks as though we don't have balance when we stand incorrectly it takes Mak a lot more effort to stand incorrectly than it does to stand properly like this body well lined up and in perfect balance Julie says he looks something like Eddie the safety patrol boy standing or walking Eddie's posture makes him look alert and important and everybody likes Eddie the drawings help Julie and Jerry to remember everything they have learned in school about posture and to find out things for themselves El if you remember proper standing proper walking comes easily abdomen shoulders head always step off on the ball of the foot point the feet straight forward when you come down come down lightly on the heel good walking is a wonderful Habit to develop It's a combination of good standing posture and proper footwork will carry you through a busy day by the time Jerry and Julie finish their drawings they can see what a great difference posture makes in the way you look and so as the months go by Jerry and Julie make their posture habits part of their good health habits and good health habits mean eating the right amount of proper Foods young growing boys and girls need good food good balanced diet of vitamins minerals and proteins they need plenty of fresh air and exercise to develop strong healthy bodies they need plenty of sleep too and by the way make sure your mattress is flat and firm and big enough so that you can lie fully stretched out use a small pillow a big one raises your head too high well this is the big day Brother David is coming home again after another 6 months of flying those big airplanes wonder how David will like that posture of of course he likes it he's proud of Jerry and Julie because they have made a fine start toward good posture habits
