Discusses and illustrates the process of plant succession from lichens through climax vegetation. Explains how soil is formed and shows how the lichen, the first plant in the ecological chain, grows. Describes how the lichen is replaced by mosses with rootlike rhizoids, by grasses, by shrubs, and finally, by pioneer trees. Explains how each plant is different from its predecessor and how the climax vegetation varies in accordance with the type of soil, rainfall, sunlight, and temperature.
