[Music] welcome to Copenhagen largest city and capital of Denmark home of 1/4 of the country's 4 million citizens Copenhagen is the baltic's most important sea port the center for Art and Science a busy Merchants town with a gay and cosmopolitan flavor miles of canals make for Pleasant sightseeing in this 800-year old [Music] city an ancient town but modern too you see Copenhagen is a study in contrast particularly those of the old and the new near a modern housing unit you may come upon cobbled streets lined with houses from the 17th and 18th centuries it's a colorful City why even the postman are cheerfully clad in [Music] red there's the Boris and the stock exchange to the left of the house of parliament with its Twisted dragon fire the building has been Inus since 1610 when it was built by Christian IV the ruler of this the oldest kingdom in the world lives at aalburg Castle located in the center of Copenhagen until World War II Denmark had never known foreign domination today she preserves with pride the panoply of her royal Traditions Housewives soldiers businessmen and children everyone rides a bike in Copenhagen half a million bicycles solve the transport question there's an attractive home here for every type of purse the newest buildings were designed carefully with the greatest amount of air sunlight and privacy in mind cooperatives and inexpensive municipally owned apartment dwellings are but a small part of Denmark's vast social welfare program there are no slums in Copenhagen the city widens out gracefully toward the residential sections the parks and playgrounds on the outskirts are the garden colonies where attractive detached houses are owned or rented by working men and their families here everyone has a green thumb and in summer the gardens are overflowing with good things to see or to eat [Music] Danes are progressive modern and practical but some things you see in Denmark can best be described as quaint or picturesque The Familiar Chimney Sweep even he on a bicycle certainly makes a quaint picture as he pedal off to his next job [Music] mother goes to Market and it's no trouble to take the children along whole families go on vacation this way after the bustle of Copenhagen the suburbs are quiet and peaceful and they all have that sparkling clean look typical of Danish towns [Music] it would seem that postmen need not ring doorbells in Denmark you can see them coming miles away in their dashing Red [Music] Coats everyone falls in love with copenhagen's little mermaid right out of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale you will pass her on the way north of the city to the beaches to Denmark's Riviera swimming yachting and sailing are of course popular in a country so surrounded with water vac vacations are Forest more extend iive and beautiful than any other in Europe it's a silven playground for Danes who camp and picnic here the deer in the park are gentle and tame a shooting Lodge the amage stands in the Deer Park which used to serve as the Royal hunting ground still farther north in Zealand is enchanting old Fredericks Borg Castle it seems to float on its foundation of three little Islands in a his son is Prince cude brother of the present king of Denmark Frederick vith fredensborg Castle is a favorite with the royal family in summer this Vine Palace was built in 1720 to commemorate the peace between Denmark and Sweden after long years of bitter war cronberg castle at Elenor was famous already in 1600 because a Young author by the name of Shakespeare wrote a play called Hamlet the original Hamlet was born years before the castle was built but Shakespeare took the liberty of writing kronborg into his drama so today the castle and Hamlet's grave stir the imagination of all visitors who have studied their English literature [Music] in rural Denmark the weary traveler May pause for refreshment at a Wayside in like this one he wonders what the clatter is about and no one can resist the Delicacies that issue from a Danish kitchen there's the picturesque Grace of antiquity in the little village of kga on Zealand's West Coast here in quaint two-story dwellings with their heavy Oak beams and leaded glass windows men of importance lived four centuries ago in some cases descendants of the original owners live here today K is a manufacturing town and of course it has always been a fishing [Music] [Music] Village appears as a vast sweep of Rich farm and cattle country broken only by a pled windmill or or a clump of low buildings where the farmer makes his [Music] home there are constant reminders that Denmark's history would fill a 100 volumes here's a mound that covers the grave of a Viking hero a formation like this is a momento from the people of the ancient stone age [Music] a bridge at the southern tip of Zealand leads to the small island of M full of varied Beauty but famed particularly for its chalk Cliff scenery these abrupt White Cliffs jutting into the intense blue of the Baltic are unique in a country of modest [Music] altitudes an inex ensive source of fuel from this island is Pete M that is cut neatly in bricks for easy marketing Beyond The Cliffs beyond the Pete bogs on M you find of course the Green Acres of the Danish farmer back in southern Zealand you hurry to the goose Tower in nearby Ving Bor the tower remains from a west of Zealand p is second largest of the 500 Islands which with the peninsula of Jutland make up Denmark the largest city Odin took its name from Odin the principal God in North mythology Odin was
