Description: Defines lithography as the art of making a design on stone so that ink-impressions can be taken from it. Shows many 19-century litographs, and explains how they have helped to preserve two decades of American History. Impressions were produced in black and white, and some were then colored by hand. People chose drawings from catalogs: fires, wild animals, Indians, the westward movement, gold rush, ravages of liquor, religious themes, rural America and, most of all, home scenes. Techniques of modern lithography are also demonstrated.
