This 1910s newsreel-style compilation opens with a city parade of mounted soldiers, horse-drawn wagons, riflemen, and men in suits carrying umbrellas, followed by Theodore Roosevelt waving his hat, greeting crowds, and speaking from a platform. It also shows governors meeting in an office, a crowded ferry crossing, and an animated cartoon of animals and a monkey climbing a tree to escape a rifle-toting Teddy Roosevelt. Woodrow Wilson throws out the first pitch on baseball’s opening day, and there’s a close-up of the ball he signed. Next comes a long submarine sequence: crew members ride on deck as it leaves the docks, the bow cuts through waves, the sub dives, its periscope skims the surface, and it resurfaces. After title cards, ships are sunk, including a reenacted scene of German sailors on a U-boat deck watching a cargo ship explode, with cutaways to Wilson at a window. The second half covers large street parades with banners, picket signs, flags, marching bands, and decorated cars, then troops and civilians boarding a military ship and arriving by train. The film closes with a survey of American industry and daily life: women in a cannery, a sausage factory, a lumber mill, steam shovels, a snowy coal plant with sluices and conveyors, mail trucks, a costumed performer for children, dams and waterfalls, canoes on a forest river, a busy city street, and a cargo ship in a harbor.
