Hi, I'm Leanne Mock. Let's be [Music] friends. I live in Pennsylvania, Dutch country. I live in the eastern part of the United States, in the state of Pennsylvania. I live in a historic village. This is the village square. Early settlers hid from Indian raids in the Indian keller. This house was built hundreds of years ago from logs. And these houses get water from a system 200 years old. It's called spring [Music] water. I live in Shaper Town. [Music] Schaefer's town is located in southeastern Pennsylvania in the Alagany Hills. Most of our ancestors came here from Germany. This is me Frankie. These men are speaking Pennsylvania Deutsch. A kind of German. Originally, people here were called Pennsylvania Deutsch. Deutsch means German, not Dutch. German people came to Pennsylvania in the 18th century to find religious freedom. Some of these were called the plain people. They live today as they did hundreds of years ago. Men wear black clothes. Women wear bonnets and long dresses. They drive horses and buggies instead of cars. Electric lights, telephones, radio and television are forbidden in their homes by religious beliefs. Others have different religious beliefs and lead more modern lives. German people also came to Pennsylvania to find land for farming. This is a plowing contest at the historic Schaffer Town Farm. [Music] Horses are also used for wagon rides. [Music] My skin.
