[Music] [Music] wow [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] this veteran prospector with his pack animal and his mining tools is looking for hay dirt day after day month after month year after year he and thousands like him have dug below the top soil of the earth and pan the rushing waters of mountain streams seeking gold silver and other precious metals men fought died and suffered every privation for this precious stuff little did they realize that the land over which they trekked to the diggings contained right on the surface the richest pay dirt of all worth and productivity and dollar value many times that of all the gold ever mine top soil that food producing substance so essential to our very lives from the top soil the real pay dirt of our land comes food in abundance produced with scientific know-how and modern power farming machinery [Music] plant food and humus barnyard manure essential to healthy plant growth conservation of moisture and maintenance of topsoil this valuable material is applied evenly and at any rate desired by modern spreaders with load capacities up to 125 bushels spreading manure the year round as fast as formed even in zero weather saves valuable nutrients and maintains sanitary barns but requires spreaders of great durability to support heavy loads and resist the action of manure acids power takeoff driven spreaders are ideal for year-round operation on snow-covered fields and frozen or slippery ground these spreaders apply the fertilizer thinly and evenly for best returns the straight inline power shaft saves power and plows and other tillage tools are built with both up and down and sideways flexibility thus the plow holds to its depth on uneven ground and of still greater importance holds to its full cutting width on curved lands a feature of real value to the soil conservation farmer practicing contour farming stony land farming has its problems but many stony lands are highly productive a new feature in plow design protects the implement against breakage and saves the operators time the driver can work at full speed in stony land if an embedded stone is encountered the plow automatically breaks away with hydraulic controls recoupling is quick and simple the coupling mechanism relatches itself and the plow is raised to clear the stone fingertip control quickly lowers the bottoms to their work as the tractor moves forward special plows of many types meet the peculiar needs of far-flung territories the two-way moldboard plow saves the time normally lost in turning across broad plow lands the plow is especially needed in irrigated areas because it leaves no back furrow and only one dead furrow in a field being tractor mounted the operator can plow up to and close alongside an irrigation ditch to avoid an objectionable headland convenient finger touch levers raise the two-way plow reverse the bottoms and lower the plow to its work on the return trip the reversible disc plow works in a similar manner you touch a control and raise the plow touch another control to reverse the discs then lower them to their work this plow will work hard sticky soils to a depth of 14 inches large for stubble disking and are especially valuable for smoothing and packing plowed fields modern discs trail well behind the tractor they are well suited to the curved lands of modern contour farming [Music] weather can be both friend and foe to the man on the land both sunshine and rainfall are needed but too much of either at the wrong time can affect yields and production costs the man with dependable power equipment can master the whims of weather much can be done during those few rare days when field work is possible in a wet spring with the fertilizer grass or legume seed and the grain seed and drill ready to go the efficient farmer gets his seeding done on time the modern drill has a band seating attachment which places the small legume seed on the soil surface in bands above the grain seed and fertilizer legume seed requires very light covering when the seeds germinate the tiny rootlets quickly reach the fertilizer the grain crop can be placed deeper in the ground along with the fertilizer for best germination and a good stand a uniform flow of seed into firm moist soil is important this sectional duplicate of a modern drill shows how the grain seed is evenly and accurately metered from the hopper to the delivery tubes the agitator in the seed hopper prevents bridging of light fluffy seeds like brome grass another view of the drill section shows the uniform flow of seed from several metering cups or feeds to see if all the feed cups on any drill are delivering seed at the same rate you can make a simple but conclusive test you jack up the drill so you can turn a wheel to drive the feeds then you place jars of equal size under the sea delivery tubes for a clearer view of the jars in our picture the disc openers and banned seeding tubes for legumes have been removed the jars now are partly filled and the seed is the same level in all of them can your present drill seed this accurately the test can be made on many types of drills including the large lister drills or furrow drills used in planes areas speaking of capacity this drill with almost a sixty foot width will cover about two hundred acres in a day allowing time for refilling the large hoppers row crop planters of many types speed up the work of planting corn beans cotton and sorghums the tractor mounted unit quickly attached through the three-point eagle hitch coupling is hydraulically raised and lowered for quick turns at the headlands good seed is the first need to get high yields of corn then a platter that will place seed in the ground at the desired depth and with a measured number of kernels per hill this sectional view of a modern case platter identifies important working parts seed plate upper valve lower valve opener or shoe in action the seed plate meters the seed into the upper valve measuring the number of kernels wanted per hill speeding up the camera provides slower motion of the action this view shows both the upper and lower valves the valves are opened automatically seed from the upper valve falls to the lower valve which drops the seed near the ground level to avoid scattering seeds from the lower valve when dropped to the pearl remain closely grouped as shown on the conveyor belt this close grouping and precise dropping of the seed is important to the modern corn grower who wants to control plant population per acre based on soil fertility each of the planting units making up this four row planter is performing in the manner just demonstrated commercial fertilizer is also being applied large hoppers to hold the fertilizer are a great convenience but placement of the fertilizer near the seed hills is most important just how this is done with modern equipment is best shown by a drawing as the seed is dropped fertilizer is also applied and placed in parallel bands on each side of the seed hills thus the seed is protected from burning but the fertilizer is close enough to be readily available to the young plants [Music] many farmers to maintain a clean weed-free field work newly planted corn and beans with a rotary hole they use the hole repeatedly from planting time till the crop is several inches high this operation is fast effective and not costly it keeps the fields clean and cuts down the cost of more intensive shovel cultivation a six-row hole will cover 100 or more acres per day this tool does its best work at fast tractor speeds and is ideal for contour planted crops a remarkable feature of this hoe is self folding the operator first releases the outer draft bars and when the tractor is driven forward the outer sections of the hole automatically fold to narrow the hole by several feet the folded hole is easily transported through farm gates and along farm lanes the unfolding operation is demonstrated with a four-section hole when the hole is back the folding sections swing about to operating position this modern cultivating outfit has the principal working shovels at the front of the tractor for quick steering response to follow the rose accurately a separate hydraulic control lifts the front gangs first and delays raising the rear shovels until they have reached the rows and after the turn the front gangs can be dropped to their work before lowering the rear gang point rows sometimes a problem with contour farmed row crops are no problem at all with a selective hydraulic lift on the cultivator watch closely the outer gang on your left see how the operator can raise this gang but continue cultivating with the right gang until the end of the longer row is reached this larger four row cultivator can be operated in the same manner watch the shovel gangs see the near gangs raised from the point rose while the far gangs continue to cultivate now the near gangs resume operation all without effort on the part of the operator pivot turning is another feature of this outfit you can come up to the headland and pivot about to the adjacent rows without stopping many four-wheel tractors are limited in turning radius this four-wheel case tractor has a turning radius of nine and a half feet the ore prospector found his pay dirt and felt richly rewarded but the real
