Description: Shows how all life depends upon the ability of chlorophyll to function as a light trap and how this initial step, through further chemical bonding, exhibits various patterns of energy transfer. Explains heterotrophic and autotrophic nutrition and their energy differences. Demonstrates experimentally an autotrophic organism's ability to nourish itself through the utilization of minerals, water, light, and air. Discusses the history of experimental work of Priestley and Ingenhouz on respiration and its effect upon plants and animals. Explains the two steps of photosynthesis--light and reaction (photolysis of water) and the change of CO2 into carbohydrates. Points out differences in endergonic and exergonic reactions. Summarizes by stressing that elements may be reused but the energy from the sun is used in keeping machinery of both plants and animals running.
