Description: Considered a film noir classic, this intricately crafted melodrama stars Robert Mitchum as a former private detective fatally embroiled with a gangster and his moll. In the town of Bridgeport, California, private eye Jeff Markham now Jeff Bailey quietly runs a gas station aided by Jimmy, a mute boy. One day, he is summoned to the home of racketeer Whit Sterling who had hired him some time back to locate his mistress, Kathie Moffett, who had absconded with $40,000. Driving to Sterling's Lake Tahoe mansion with girlfriend Ann, Markham relates the story of his involvement via flashback. Having tracked down Moffett, Markham, mistakenly convinced of her innocence, succumbed to her wiles. In the film's tragic denouement, Markham discovers that he cannot escape the past and must pay with his life. Note worthy for its strong characterizations and realistic on-location settings, the film was also responsible for catapulting Mitchum to star status.
