Driving to Sterling's Lake Tahoe mansion with girlfriend Ann, Markham relates the story of his involvement via flashback. Having tracked down Moffett, Markham, mistakenly convinced of her innocence, succumbed to her wiles. In the film's tragic denouement, Markham discovers that he cannot escape the past and must pay with his life.
