Description: Discusses the nature of species and the essential role that reproductive isolating mechanisms have in their origin. Pictures the existence in nature of a number of reproductive isolating barriers (ecological, seasonal, sexual, hybrid inviability, hybrid sterility). Indicates that any particular barrier has a multiple genic or chromosomal basis and that any two species are separated via a number of reproductive barriers. Stresses the lack of correlation between morphology and reproductive isolation. Lecture given by Dr. G. L. Stebbins.
