Documentary that uses visuals, including archival and newsreel footage, to re-create the substance of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's Nobel Prize lecture on literature. Solzhenitsyn's speech, which accompanies the film, questions how individuals can address the evils of the world and suggests that the writer can stand as a witness against falsehood.

Solzhenitsyn's words are combined with music and with cinematography of a Nobel Prize ceremony in Sweden and of a Russian forced-labor camp in Siberia.
