The importance of black women as the foundation of the community through their dedicated contributions to education, the church, and the family is told through the profiles of five remarkable Canadian women. Each woman provides an exceptional example of the commitment and struggle required to rise above the overwhelming "ceremony of toil and the indignities of racism" which have for decades characterized the black experience. Through their perseverance and active involvement in the community, they preserve their black heritage and foster a positive identity for the black community's most precious resource, its children.
