This color educational/promotional film is about the new Northrop F-18 prototype Navy Hornet jet, which was displayed at the 32nd Annual Air and Space Exposition in Paris, France at the Le Bourget Airport. This was made in 1978. Northrop's F-18 prototype Navy Hornet jet taxis out and then is flying in the air. Opening titles: F-18 Hornet Prototype Odyssey 77 (:09-:27). The Northrop F-18 flies. The plane is serviced on the ground. POV from inside the cockpit as it takes off at dusk. The plane flies high. It flies over a populated city. Eiffel Tower, Paris, France. A boat goes down the River Seine. The Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile is the most famous arch in Paris. It is 50 metres high and 45 metres wide and was built between 1806 and 1836. It pays tribute to the soldiers who fought and died for France in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. A police officer directs traffic. A man paints by the Seine. Flags of many countries wave in the wind as the 32nd Annual Air and Space Exposition begins in Paris, France at the Le Bourget Airport. Many planes are on display as is the Concorde. Lots of people. The Spirit of St. Louis, flown by Charles Lindbergh is on display as is the Northrop F-18 prototype Navy jet. A man takes a picture of the jet (:28-2:31). The bombs of the jet are on it. A military jet takes off. An AWAC flies above the crowd, the AWAC (Airborne Warning And Control System), is a mobile, long-range radar surveillance and control centre for air defense. The system, as developed by the U.S. Air Force, is mounted in a specially modified Boeing 707 aircraft. Planes perform tricks in the sky. A 329 Squadron RAF takes off. A helicopter does tricks as does other planes. A Boeing YC-14 comes in for a landing. An F-14 Tomcat performs maneuvers. AN F-39 jet. Helicopters. A man propels from a helicopter. A plane does a trick. People line up with cameras (2:32-4:29). Northrop's F-18 prototype Navy Hornet jet picks up speed on the runway and takes off as people watch. Once in the air it does quick maneuvers. POV shots from inside the plane. It does a flyby to see the undercarriage of it. It then does a 360 in the sky. The F-18 continues to fly and show off what it can do (4:30-7:26). The F-18 comes in for a landing in the USA. Sign for: Main Gate N.A.S. Oceana Apollo Soucek Field Master Jet Base. Officers look at the plane. Officers are gathered to watch the jet perform. The Northrop F-18 takes off and flies. Sign: MCAS Beaufort, S.C., Home of MAG 31. northrup's F-18 prototype beginning another tour with its second International showing and initial debut at the world's largest Air Show Paris [Applause] 77 the aircraft was flown by Northrup Chief test pilot Hank Shoto during the ferry operations the F-18 prototype logged more than 27 hours of flight time with only routine turnaround servicing at stops along the way the Hornet prototype encountered a wide variety of environmental conditions during the journey takeoffs and landings were accomplished in adverse weather all without incident with two 600g tanks the aircraft flew over 1,400 nautical miles on one leg of the ferry flight demonstrating its excellent range [Music] capability [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] la the 32nd International Air and Space Exposition at Liber airport traditional site of the Paris Air [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Show [Music] la [Music] n PA p the northr corporation Proto FD prototype of US Navy F18 or a18 hornet [Music] maximum speed 1,260 knots maximum range 2,965 noal [Music] miles initial climb rate is over 16,000 m per [Music] [Applause] [Music] minute arriving back in the United States after the Paris air show The Hornet prototype performed a series of flights to demonstrate ITS Tactical maneuvering capability at Navy and Marine Corps [Music] bases fing takeoff which will be a little bit short of 1,000 ft this morning at max power I'll do a 60° climbing turn into the traffic pattern and roll out at 170 knots [Music] [Music] scheduled to replace the A7 and F4 in Navy and Marine Corps inventories the F-18 is designed to provide exceptionally high levels of reliability and maintainability this reliability will improve operational Readiness and reduce life cycle costs this means a lower level of Squadron maintenance Manning The Hornet gives its pilot greater speed over the target a high loaded turn capability increased Mission radius and an improved thrust to weight ratio for high energy [Music] Reserves I'll slow the aircraft down and come back in a a high angle of attack path now this airplane can be stabilized in level flight at 85 knots at uh 34° angle of attack at maximum power so the high angle of attack path that you see is well within the middle of the level flight angle of attack capability of the aircraft [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] n [Music] [Music] F-18 prototype performed 19 high performance aerial demonstrations and log 38 total flights never miss ing a scheduled [Applause] [Music] event The Hornet prototype demonstrated to the pilots and Crews who will be operating the F-18 as well as an international audience in Paris the high performance and reliability of the US Navy and Marine corps's latest Strike [Music] Fighter
