Felix the cat propaganda cartoon. b&w, 1924. Felix tries to solve a crossword puzzle for his owner. His only clue is a word found in Russia. He steps outside in house and is kicked in the butt by a donkey all the way to Russia. In Russia he’s accused of being a spy. He’s then chased by a Russian and finds documented plans for a Russian revolt. Russians throw bombs at him, his tail falls off. He is then catapulted home by the force of an exploding bomb. His owner asks him if he found the answer to the puzzle. Felix replies that all he found was trouble. His owner flings his arms in the air and yells, “TROUBLE, that’s it !”( the answer to the riddle) 3. A family vacation to the West U.S., b&w, circa 1954. The “family” is off to the cattle country, footage of various woodland creatures, coyotes, porcupines, swans, bison, deer, elk, antelope, tourists w/ cameras, moose, bears, very silly voiceover. 4. Brittanica 3, color, 1973. Red shift, color fade. melodramatic ad seems to be unintentionally comical. Gigantic encyclopedias emerge from crumbling monolithic ruins. 5. Borateem star drifts above laundry, Mom’s hands catch a star and put it back in the box. Chef stands in stained chef outfit and chef hat. He’s handed a box of detergent from off screen. Water begins to rise all around him. He shakes detergent into water and flaps his arms under the surface like a human agitator, fast time lapse, water recedes, all clean. Quick zoom in on ALL with bleach, borax and brighteners! k) Playtex Padded Bra. Color, 1968. red shift. - MS of woman with 60’s flip holding a pair of scissors. Cut to padded bra being sliced to show of the authenticity of the bra’s inner lining. l) Playtex 5 lbs thinner Girdle. color, 1968. color fade and red shift. sped up mock footage of 19th century girl struggling with a snap closure girdle, cut to “present day”. Polynesian man in a ridiculous (traditional?) headdress wielding two boxes of cereal above his head, climbs up side of a yacht, everyone dressed in mod-sixties outfits, it becomes a whacky, zany costumed breakfast party!! o) Kellogg’s Sugar Smacks. color, 1968. color fade, red shift. two cartoon boys smack each other with boxing gloves. p) All temperature cheer. Color, 1969. red shift, color fade. Mom smooches the kids before sending them off to school in unclean clothes. Super tall Vulcan from the future materializes before her to demonstrate how Cheer can be used in all temperatures. Mom holds up clean clothes, Vulcan holds box of detergent. Vulcan dematerializes. Mom speaks the praises of Cheer. q) Ivory Snow detergent. color, 1970. red shift, color fade. Family gathered in front of country home; father holds two babies in lap and tests the softness of diapers.
