pediatric nurse practitioner here in the clinic I take care of children doing a lot of things as a nurse the same thing that doctors do doctors still continue to do but more and more have been given the responsibility to nurses who have extra education and we do um physical examinations of children and physical assessment of whether they're growing and developing correctly and telling mothers and fathers you know what's wrong with their children uh how to care for them and how to take care of simple childhood illnesses that other times have been cared for by doctors and are still cared for by doctors and other practices redness is gone redness is gone completely now we look at your throat yeah yeah look at your [Music] throat yucky it's always been in the back okay okay now you can't have that in your mou you can have did you like another one huh very good okay you want to walk to Mom let me see if you have straight nice straight feet Come on Mommy D come on oh very good okay yes you're all well very good today you get your shot down they're the measles in the MS yeah there's no reaction right away to those she's going to get a reaction it'll be about a week a week 10 days to the measles part of it what kind of a reaction fever sometimes sometimes even a rash like a m one of the measles you going to be doing anything special a week or you I wouldn't give it then we almost Mrs mafy call this morning a little while ago and she got completely confused in a way too she thinks he has congestion in his lungs and not in his ears she says his coughing spells are getting much worse but not in severity just a little more often and she's more worried that he's going to rupture something more than anything yeah she CU he cough much she's not bringing up any mucus or anything I told her to continue on the actifit for at least another couple of days she's only been doing I kind of like to think doctor and nurse are side by side rather than on a run because the most important person in treating an illness or any condition is the patient and you have a health Team to treat people with and I don't think one is higher than the other and that the patient is the highest the person you're taking care of it doesn't interfere with it sleep that much does he get bed no he does vomit but no mucus just he just coughs himself I guess gags himself [Music] okay very [Music] I enjoy working in ukai which is a small town 10,000 people and that you have a little more freedom around you to mingle with the people and you get to know your patients and you get to see how they really live and how you can tailor their care to their way of life and also the it's not the the hustle and bustle of a city which at times I do but I think there's a greater need for nurse practitioners in the country in a country or rural setting where there are not enough usually doctors to go around per patient [Music] [Music] came [Music] with usually the day starts with a visit to the hospital and talking to mothers of the newborn babies that are there look for the yellow think she's more yellow than when she left the hospital the normal the liver just can't do the job it's supposed to first few days and I think there's something in the mother's breast milk that makes um deliver not do the job it's supposed to so they get a little bit more yellow for us bed babies then I come out to the office and we have telephone hour in our office from 9 for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon in which I see no patience and I'm free to answer the phone for any questions parents may have has the cost spasms gotten Less in any way so go ahead and continue that for at least a couple more days and then give us a call back but if you should get a temperature call back sooner okay mhm and then I see patience in the morning after that and in the afternoon after telephone hour are you breastfeeding him or bottle feedingfeeding how often does he eat very regular cuz yesterday he had about 11 it was about 11:30 he ate and then um he slept most the afternoon didn't need again until real late yesterday evening okay he's going to if he's going to sleep longer than 3 or 3 and 1 half hours 4 hours wake him up and put him to breath at night leave them be yeah but during the day wake him up he needs to eat when he's this tiny was he this yellow when he left the hospital I think he's gotten darker and more yellow since okay this is very normal doctors and nurses are not always the person who can do the most for the patient a lot of times it's the parent and if the parent is educated enough in the right aspect of the medical problem of it they can you know treat their child probably better than a nurse and a doctor can at times you they know how their child responds to different situations and it leads into the aspect of in this country of taking care of people and help helping them prevent disease rather than taking care of diseases and this is the way medicine should start thinking and health of prevent of diseases rather than just coming in to the doctor when you're sick coming to make sure that you're well and for advice and counseling this is Health now Health isn't just being sick it's being well and how to stay well if and becoming a nurse practitioner um I would advise any person who's interested to go into a nursing school and then in some schools it will become an integral part of the program right now it's an extra added course but I think there's some programs that are beginning to put in the senior year of the of the Collegiate schools of nursing but I think as a nurse practitioner for the first time I'm using every bit of knowledge I learned in the four years of nursing school that I went to you know using every bit of it from every [Music] angle I've always worked with children since I got out of Nursing and I will always work with children I relate to them a lot better than I do with adults to carry out the philosophy of medicine that I have of letting people take care of themselves you have to start at an early age I feel education of the children is the most important part of it [Music]
