Description: The life of Abdi, the 12-year-old son of war refugees living in the Somalian desert, centers on efforts to achieve subsistence-level nutrition and shelter. Abdi's day consists of periodic Moslem prayers to Allah, two hours at school and the arduous search for fuel. He visits the refugee camps's marketplace and plays briefly with friends. In his culture, transplanted by war from the Ogaden region of eastern Ethiopia, it is the responsibility of the women to carry water and prepare meals for the men of the family. Scarce water, lack of food, little medical care and inadequate land are problems that face Abdi and his family.
