President Eisenhower to his Korean [Music] host in alamaa California 4-year-old Lee kyung Su a Korean orphan arrives in his adopted country after first being adopted himself by bosen's mate Vincent Paladino of the Navy the chief a 35-year-old Bachelor found Lee a year ago and it's been a red tape battle since but Navy men just don't give [Music] up this Story begins with a Clos line in calendar Ontario 19 years ago it's the story of the Dion quintets the world's most famous babies these are the very first films ever made of the newly born Annette Von Marie Emily and Cecile through the magic [Music] defenses the X3 research jet is the strangest looking plane in the skies these are first films of the dagger-shaped ship better known as the flying stiletto which has been undergoing secret testing for a year the needle nose and stubby Wings increase the stileto speed it's designed to fly up to 2,000 mph the plane lands so fast a parachute acts as a break a new dagger for defense the flying stiletto [Music] the experience of age meets the enthusiasm of Youth at monam the Netherlands where Craftsmen guide 40 Boys in creating remarkable imitations like this model of Mam's Bell Tower the real Tower centuries old still times The Village's life with its cheerful carolon [Music] the model 11 ft tall closely resembles the historic Bell Tower with tiny structural steel parts forming Theater which has twice toured America and is rehearsing for a third trip [Applause] marionet date back to the ancient Egyptians their popularity reached a peak in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries and even today there's still something remarkably lifelike about the little wooden people on strings the amazing marionet [Music] this is Snug Harbor for the Navy's big warships of the sky the huge Naval Air Station at Lake Hurst New Jersey from here the blimps fly anti-submarine training missions over the Atlantic Ocean a naval Reserve crew aboard an Airship prepares to take off the moing Mast keeps the blimps nose pointed into the wind until the proper moment when this link with the ground is finally released and the pilots spin the wheel s that operate the elevators and the rudder slowly the Airship moves forward and up under the double pull of its engines and its gas inflated bag the huge helium fil envelope makes the blimp lighter than air well Aloft a course is set of from 8 to 10 men to operate a blimp approaching the base at Lakehurst the crew prepares to land the ground handlers line up in a letter v formation while the blimp Maneuvers into the center of the V with the handlers on the lines the Airship comes to rest another Voyage is over for one of the Navy's air warships on blimp Patrol [Music] the challenge ahead is to cross the barren Lonely Heart of Australia by automobile it's a journey by car through the wastelands of one of the oldest of the Earth's continents past giant Boulders that have come to be called The Devil's marbles it's a gruelling race for the autom mobiles and their drivers from Darwin on the North Coast to Sydney on the Southeast Shore 3,000 Mi the distance from Los Angeles to New [Music] York in the far north where few white men live wild camels roam the desert much as the American buffalo once wandered our Western PLS Crossing Australia by car today is like spanning America in the early days of the automobile in Australia the last continent to be discovered lived the Aboriginal TR men Restless Nomads A Primitive [Music] people for the cars follow the road the twist to the South a tortuous trail that leads to Earth's smallest continent and largest island the light is fading fast the night cloaks new dangers along the road ridges and ruts that snap axles and blow out tires but the race rolls on and the cars approach the severest test in the cross country course new hazards to punish machines and men after 2,000 mil of the roughest kind of driving casualties Mount the automobiles stall as they attempt to plow through a treacherous Street stream one by one they are pulled from the water to face rugged new obstacles in rugged young Australia first settled only 165 years ago Australia is today a land of Rich untapped promise roads that are little more than paths now will someday yield to the highways that are so vital in the growth of Any Nation progress will cut through the Australian Wilderness and [Applause] the world of Photography past and present beckons us to Eastman house in Rochester New York here through unique and unusual exhibitions that span more than 100 years visitors can explore the growth and development of this revolutionary Art and Science for photography is today an important and many times indispensable tool in every branch of human endeavor trophies of the hunt do the walls of the house built by George man and now an educational Memorial bearing his name man's efforts to reproduce the world around him are ages old this 17th century volume contains the earliest known illustration of the camera obscurer it had a small opening through which the image of an outside scene was cast on a screen inside man's next search was for a substance sensitive to light to retain the fleeting image in this device it was traced on thin [Music] paper the degaro type technique of making photographs on Metals developed in the early 1800s brought the camera age into being in dear's process a copper plate was made sensitive to light exposed in a camera and then developed with Mercury fumes this is the world's first photograph taken in 1826 showing a courtyard it was made by dear's collaborator neps next came Talbert's negative positive process of making photographs on paper William Henry Fox talber perfected the negative plate from which any number of positive prints could be [Music] made as photography took root in the Public's imagination studi sprang up to do a flourishing business in picture portraits expert as the photographers might be the portraits were a tedious task the negative plates in the camera sometimes required up to 8 minutes of exposure during which the subject was required to remain completely rigid a brace helped keep the head Motionless in the days before electricity the Sun and reflectors provided the photographer with the only effective method of writing his subject ready now he removes the camera's lens cap to expose the plate when the cap was replaced the young lady could sigh with relief and wait for the prince that looked just like [Music] this the new Art of Photography was utilized in many clever inventions the megalethoscope which appeared in 1862 was one of the most unusual this photograph of St Peter's in Rome is illuminated by mirrors mounted on the open doors day becomes night when they are closed permitting only pin holes of light to enter from the back stereoscopic or three dimensional photography dates back to 1838 two photographs taken from viewpoints equal to the distance between the eyes produce an amazing illusion of depth when seen together from the first viewer to the later models of granddad's day stereoscopic pictures have fascinated young and old one snow parlor was complete without them and today three-dimensional photography has won a new popularity back in the pioneer days of landscape photography the cameraman had to carry his own portable dark room with him wherever he went a new technique the codian process had made both the deero type and tala type methods obsolete it required however that negatives be exposed and developed while wet the operation was often a Twan undertaking for it took hours to set up the tent and the complicated apparatus for the dark room by the time everything was set the sun might have disappeared when all was ready the photographer went into the tent which had an opening permitting only infrared light to enter Then he would coat a glass plate with codeon a mixture of gun cotton ether and alcohol to make it sensitive to sunlight the plate was placed in the camera immediately for it remained light sensitive only while [Music] [Applause] wet although awkward and difficult the codeon process gave brilliant results when developed and was extremely popular from 1851 to 1881 with the invention of the Revolutionary dry plate process bulky equipment gave way to small secret cameras they were disguised as common objects so that candid pictures could be taken cameras were even made to resemble revolvers pulling the trigger released the shutter the cylinder held 10 tiny negative plates General Oscar n solbert director of Eastman house demonstrates another of the secret cameras this one cleverly concealed in the head of a walking stick an intricate and ingenious series of cogs and wheels enabled the owner to take several pictures without reloading his Cane camera one of the tiniest spy cameras was secreted in a neckti still another was this camera hidden in a 19th century vest pocket watch it too was made possible by the dry plate process photographers could buy ready-made plates expose them anytime and develop them at their Leisure photography now belong to the millions at The Dryden Gallery the history of of American photography becomes as well the history of The American Nation a pageant in pictures of progress unmatched since the beginning of time a new photograph is mounted in the Priceless collection by the curator of Eastman house Dr bont New Hall with his photographic buggy Matthew Brady made many of the Museum's fine Civil War pictures wagon dark rooms enabled cameramen to travel with the armies of the North and South Union volunteers reporting for Duty Confederate artillery poised for battle Confederate cannons fortifications and Tents in Atlanta and one of the best known photographs of the period President Lincoln visiting General mclen at antium history has come alive through the lens of the camera here at Eastman house is the story of still photography a magic
