Thank [music] [music] Maria Maria. [music] [music] >> Maria is the title of Jane Sri's newest album. I don't know why it's called Maria. It just is. But then Jane doesn't relate to reasons as much as she does inspiration, and she has a lot of that. Her creativity is widely appreciated. On past albums, she's worked with master musicians Brian Eno and Peter Gabriel. And on Maria, which she produced, she's backed by some pretty hot jazz-based players. Jane likes New York, so we went to New York to hang, to talk, and to contemplate. Maria [music] >> [music] [music] >> You're spending a lot more time in New York now. I am. And uh what's the name of this church? >> This is St. Patrick's Church. It's it's a very famous [music] church. It's on all the tourist maps. And I go in there when I need to just calm down and, you know, just sit still for a while. And um last time I had a record come out. But when I was a boy, I was in New York just visiting once again. And so I came here on my travels, you know, between interviews and stuff. And I I went inside and within 2 minutes a man was came to the pulpit and started talking about Peter and Jesus the fisherman story you know when when Jesus asked him to walk on it was the strangest thing and and seemed very right and I've always connected that with the last record. [music] >> Are we not willing? Are we not [singing] standing? Are we not frozen? Are we not [music and singing] trembling? Are we not children? Are we not trying? Are we [music] not wondering? Are we not Oh, [music] people come here for from all over the world, all kinds of cultures. There's a horse over there that's waiting to come in. And they have a special um mass just for horses. >> That would be the dead pan Jane Sbury humor. Be famous for them. >> Yeah. And nobody knows what goes on in these masses cuz they won't let anyone in. Not even the owners or the trainers or not the people who brought them here. Everyone waits outside and the horses file in one by one up the steps and go in and sit quietly and they all come out and they look different when they come out. >> Come on. [music] Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. [music] I want you to the temple. [music] The temple. [singing] [music] >> I've noticed that when I [music] release records, all my old stuff gets played just before it comes out. it it's like a this charge starts to [music] happen about you that you're about to go into the public eye again and then you'll disappear again as you go in into your work or whatever. So my and [music] my reference point for that is my mother who who gets flurries of phone calls at different times probably also related to moon cycles and stuff like that but also record releases. Everyone's calling saying, "Oh, I just saw your daughter and she's looking more and more like you every day. [laughter] [music] Heat. [music] Heat. [singing] [music] [singing] [music] Reminds me of my love. Beautiful things remind me of my [music and singing] I'm bound by the beauty. [music] I don't wonder anymore. I'm a different person. I know what I want in certain areas. I don't have the same hesitancy that I used to have in certain areas. You're more direct even in your speech, am I? >> Yeah. I'm also myopic. So that annot [music] to see [music] your chickening eyes. You're banging on the beach [music] taking drugs. I can't [music] wait till you make the world. Keep closer. [music] The thing is is like the kind of heat you feel in New York is like so close and so on. So Jane wants to go to the Turkish baths just cuz that's the way she is. It's hot. Let's get hotter. >> Hello Smoke. Hello. >> Hello. >> We're here to sweat. >> So, it's not it's not hot enough. We like to get a bit hotter. >> All right. It's not going to help me. >> Well, this is the first time I've been able to do the artwork myself because now I I I know enough about the design programs on the computer. I've never done something that's so visual before, graphics. I don't draw or anything like that. But so I saw the same order, the same logic was working in that in this. And I'd stay up all night and get lost in it until finally I would stop when I knew that it was that the logic had had pronounced itself. It was late at night. I had just got the shots from the photo shoot. My other album cover was going to press the next day and I had no one to call to say, "Well, which shot do you like best?" So, I I was tired and bored and I said, "I really like this one with this bra showing and I [music] look a bit hard and it's interesting visually and um Maria shouldn't [music] be wearing a curtchief. She should be wearing a a pink bra." See the child that chases the dog that jumps [music] in the butterfly. Yeah. Yeah. See the child that chases [music] the dog that jumps in the butterfly. Yeah. Yeah. >> [music] >> See the yellow dress and the child that chases the dog jumps in the butterfly. [music] What things that were [music] present in you that are not present in you now? What things have you discarded that you don't carry around with you anymore that make it easier for you to [music] do what it is that you do? >> Uh, well, I I'm not so afraid of not being liked now. So, I'll stand there and watch people's faces drop or see, you know, the dislike [music] come over their face cuz I've said something, which is what I believe, and I know they won't like it. Not something necessarily hurtful. I don't try to hurt, [music] but I try to not dazzle or wag my tail and make people like [music] me like something that isn't me, which I used to do a lot because I was afraid if I didn't, I would have love withdrawn from me, you know, and and a very large thing. So, I I'm better at just standing my ground and just and and not being afraid to see >> that happen. And that's a freedom that I I don't regret at all. >> Come give [music] your love to me [music] again. Send me across [music] the water. >> [music]
