Description: This 1965 color film on Argentina is one of a series of Pan Am New Horizons travelogues. It is a F.D. and I.L. Kay and Film Authors Production and narrated by Duncan Pirnie. A Pan American Jetliner lands and passengers disembark (:50-1:02). The film opens with a bird’s eye view of Buenos Aires (1:04-1:27). A square is full of pigeons (1:28) outside the subway station (1:32). A traffic cop blows his whistle and directs traffic (1:34). Busses and cars drive past (1:35-2:00). A man on a Vespa scooter pulls a cart full of children (2:02-2:08). A man sleeps on stacks of objects in the back of an open truck (2:12). People eat at outdoor cafes (2:14-2:20). A street vendor pours a cup of coffee to a passenger in a car (2:23-2:31). Inside a coffee bar, a line of coffee cups are filled (2:32-2:38). Shown are The Congress Building (2:39-2:49), the horseback statue of Jose de San Martin (2:50), the Casa Rosada pink house (2:57-3:08) and the changing of the guard (3:09-3:27). The Avenida Santa Fe street is full of well-dressed shoppers (3:28-3:38). A woman in a blue shift dress wears pearls, red gloves, and sunglasses (3:39). For sale are patent leather purses (3:42-3:58). Another store features items symbolic of gauchos (3:59-4:17). A woman tries on a vicuna wool scarf (4:19). Cattle are barbequed over a large burning open pit (4:30). A man pours a glass of wine from a large bottle in a basket (4:35). A construction crew cooks steaks over a plywood fire (4:44-5:08). An elderly gardener uses a hose to water flowers (5:32-5:40) in the city parks where people row boats amongst swans (5:41-5:47). A couple have a romantic conversation on a park bench (5:48) and birds fly in front of a small child (5:50). A view of the outside of a multi-tier apartment building zooms in on a couple dressed in bathing suits (5:57-6:00). Polo is a popular sport (6:01-6:30), as is juego del pato, also known as duck (6:31-7:09). Neon signs light up the evening (7:11- 7:19). A large metal bell is rung as chefs prepare to serve steaks (7:20). Elegantly dressed people arrive at the Teatro Colon opera house (7:32-8:03). Restaurants and night clubs offer dancing (8:04). La Boca offers informal dining and dancing (8:18-8:52). Mar de Plata is shown from above (8:54-9:00). Waves crash on a rocky beach full of sunbathers in 1960s swimsuits (9:03-9:30). The government-owned casino is also at the beach (9:32). Inside, popular games include roulette and craps tables (9:32- 9:57). San Carlos de Bariloche is another favorite wilderness area to visit (10:05-10:38) with its different flowers and yae yae trees (10:39-11:00). The native arrayanes trees strangely twist together in the forest (11:03-11:44). [Music] [Music] Argentina deep in the southern hemisphere but now in this jet age only hours away for all her magnitude 1/4 of Argentina's 20 million people live here in Buenos Aires the mood and flavor this great city gripped the traveller there is a mellowness here a settled charm reminiscent of Paris the very name wayna Cyrus means city of the good Aires there are subways the only ones in Latin America despite that outward air of leisure wayna Cyrus is a true metropolis she builds cars and refines oil tax meets Prince books trades with the entire world when Osiris is older than New York by a generation and she too owes much of her greatness to immigrants who speak German Italian and English as well as Spanish [Music] but there's time to relax too coffee break wherever you are the coffee bar and the coffee klatch mix pleasure and pleasure business and friendship [Music] the Argentine Congress the statue of Jose the Sun Martine he led the revolutionary armies of Spanish America in Chile and Peru as well as Argentina the Casa Rosada or pink house Argentina's presidential mansion Argentina's president is chief executive of a land the size of Europe not including Russia the changing of the guard the other need another phase one of Buenos Aires has many great shopping streets [Music] a great place for browsing and for shopping [Music] the curios in this shop derived from the ornate traditional gear of the Argentine Gaucho there was a time when only the Inca Nobles were permitted to wear vicuna the barbecues remind us that Argentina is one of the world's prime cattle raising labs [Music] construction crews appoint one of their number to oversee the matter of lunch are the Argentine better than something from a lunch box [Music] the city has many neighborhoods of differing character the gardener however is a citywide personality in Buenos Aires living right within the parks the better to take care of them there are dozens of parks to keep the concrete at bay Olo is a great popular sport and there are good many fields where it is played for thousands of well-dressed fans wouldn't be seen at a game without coat and tie [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] harkening to the ruffled days in the pampas of yesteryear when the Gauchos used a duck in a leather bag with head and tail protruding is this game called Pato or simply - iris by night beef is king each steak has its own pedigree from one of the great cattle farms adopt the Great Plains but the author of Cologne one of the world's great opera houses for a recital a symphony and an opera have been known to take place within one single day the city is never more glitter than here where you dress to fit the occasion [Music] scores of restaurants and nightspots [Music] and in the famed waterfront section of La Boca informality is the rule [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] but when Osiris goes for a season or a weekend Mar del Plata the greatest of all resorts in the southern hemisphere some 250 miles south of Buenos Aires Martell Potter's government-owned casino is the largest in the world it offers many games but above all roulette the Casino uses all its winnings for public and charitable works [Music] another favorite resort bariloche for thousands of square miles that traveller views the Majesties of Argentina's national parks in the heart of the Lake Region uncrowded unspoiled the town of Bariloche two and a half hours by air from Buenos Aires the Center for tours through Argentina's great temperate zone wilderness a favorite stopping place is the yaeyama tell here in the Lake District of Argentina the flowers are themselves an inland sea of color and movement under the yo-yo tree [Music] here near bariloche the very tree trunks of the forest are abloom and twisting together such of the erogenous unlike any other tree in the world streaked with subtle colors IANA Janis are protected as an Argentine national treasure [Applause] a thousand miles to the north Argentina shares a magnificence of falling water with neighboring Brazil and a surrounding wilderness with Paraguay too the Falls of iguazu two miles wide and more than 200 feet high dwarf all of us planes fly here roads lead here to the south Buenos Aires throbs with metropolitan movement but here the abiding wilderness presents that other face of Argentina [Music] [Music]
