Mr Never Learn Meets the Firefighters

[Music] don't be frightened this is your friend the firefighter we all know fire can keep us warm and cook our dinner [Music] but fire can burn down our houses and schools making poisonous smoke that can kill us it's a dangerous job being a firefighter they're brave and strong and spend a lot of time learning how to put out fires firefighters train at a smoke house a special building that can't burn down inside the smokehouse they learn to use an air mask and they practice finding their way safely through smoke-filled buildings [Music] [Applause] they practice rescues using aerial ladders they know exactly what to do to get us down safely if we're trapped in a burning building but firefighters learn more than firefighting they become skilled in the use of the many tools of rescue such as these jaws of life they are trained to rescue accident victims trapped in their vehicles when they're on duty most of their time is spent at the fire you mark the rib station so that your hands are in the proper position even here they learn to save lives through first aid training make sure the mask is correct every day they check all the equipment to make sure it works between chores there are moments to relax but the firefighters are always ready [Applause] a fire alarm sounds the fire department is called the closest fire hall is alerted [Music] and they're on their way [Music] when you hear the fire truck siren get out of the way don't try to cross the street even if the light's green some people never learn [Music] all the training all the practice all the preparation could one day save your home maybe even your life [Applause] when the firefighter goes off duty he's glad to go home to his family hi sweetheart hi they're happy to have him home safe and sound got something for you let's see firefighters would rather prevent fires than put them out yes good afternoon i'm captain alexander from north york party department if you like they'll even visit your home to make sure it's safe from fire he reminds us not to play with matches or lighters they'll check to make sure you have smoke detectors because they know an early warning can save your life they know that smoke kills more people than fire does they'll check the wiring because faulty wires and misuse of electricity can cause fires but some people just never learn [Music] they put too many plugs in an outlet or leave their dinner unattended on the stove [Music] thank goodness janice is here even if she thinks the fire is out she knows enough to get everyone out of the house and call the fire department from a neighbor's hello i've had a fire in my home and i'd like the north york fire department please better to be safe than sorry the firefighter visits our schools to make sure they're safe too we'll have to remove these wedges it's against a lot of force open the smoke door and it's dangerous he wants us to be firefighters as well how many of you boys and girls know of someone who does play with matches could you put up your hands so what should we do if we were to see somebody playing with matches right you should give them to an adult right away that way you'll stop other children from playing with fire and remember it's not tattletailing that's fire fighting and if you see a fire you could yell the word fire but a better way to tell everybody there's a fire in a big building is to pull the fire alarm but you must never pull a fire alarm unless there's a real fire why would it be dangerous to pull a fire alarm when there was no fire because you could be risking their lives because there could be a real fire or somebody badly injured another building you could hurt somebody else who wasn't even involved in a fire if you pull the alarm and the fire truck is coming and another car is coming they might get into an accident now this was one of the fire trucks that we had sent to a building when we received reports that the fire alarms are ringing in the building and this fire truck it never made it to the building because it got into an accident on the way and the fire truck overturned and four the firefighters that were on this fire truck were hurt very very badly and one of them was killed when the other fire trucks got to the building one of the captains he had to radio back to the headquarters that it was a malicious false alarm but if there's a real alarm we must get out of the school safely don't talk walk quickly or if there's smoke crawl we practice fire drills at school but the firefighter teaches us how important it is to practice fire drills at home a firefighter came to our school today he told us what to do if we ever have a fire we should plan how to get out of the house and practice getting out this is a floor plan of our house and there should be at least two exits for each room and once you get out you stay out and you meet at this meeting place and we have to get some smoke detectors [Music] some people just never learn they smoke when they're tired [Music] feel the door if it's not hot open it just a crack if smoke comes in close it quickly if it is hot don't even open it go out the window [Music] if your window won't open break it with something heavy like a dresser drawer [Music] watch out for broken glass be sure to clear all the sharp edges away before you climb out [Applause] [Music] mr neverlearn was
