[Music] meteorology research incorporated presents Mr I and the standard meteorological system meteorology research thank you one moment day after day MRI receives inquiries from customers who have requirements for meteorological measuring equipment these calls are typically received by an applications engineer who discusses the requirements and customers special needs after careful consideration a proposal is prepared which defines the configuration of the system and details specific appications for all of the [Music] components this proposal is transmitted to the customer for [Music] review in order to accommodate as many customers as possible MRI has established a standard meteorological system which provides the data required by federal standards in addition it is possible to have this system fully oper operational on the customer's site within a 30-day period the standard meteorological system consists of a variety of components including the transmuter for Signal conditioning the recorders for analog recording of the various parameters and the capability for Digital Data [Music] logging Incorporated are both a Digital Data Logger and a magnetic tape recorder in addition to the instrument cabinet a variety of sensors are provided for the measurement of temperature and wind the temperature and lapse rate are measured with therms housed in power aspirators a variety of wind sensors are available the model 1022 is commonly used it consists of separate wind speed and wind direction sensors and a [Music] crossarm each sensor mounts in a keyed base which allows simple installation and removal without any tools while maintaining the Ori orientation of the wind [Music] direction the anomet cup assembly is stainless steel aluminum is used in the remaining [Music] assembly cabling is provided for each sensor at each level a unique connector selection eliminates the proper connection of components the instrument shelter is of aluminum exterior construction and is equipped with a heater and air conditioner for proper temperature control of the data logging system it is skid mounted so that it can be taken into the field with the instrumentation already in place and then permanently installed on a cement slab on site for a conventional installation a 60 M Tower is provided one of the advantages of this Tower is that it does not require painting or lighting to Federal Aviation Administration specifications all components and installation are provided by mri's field operations Department in order to acquaint you with mri's quick reaction capability we will follow through the chronology of an order which was recently received for a standard meteorological system but requiring special [Music] modifications with acknowledgement of the order a sales order is prepared which defines to the manufacturing Department exactly what is to be delivered to the customer [Music] the transmuter is then modified to accept additional parameters beyond the standard options for the system or in this case equipped for special lightning protection required by the unique characteristics of the [Music] site after these modifications are complete the quality control and checkout process begins circuit cards are aligned and tested in accordance with standard quality assurance procedures and calibrated to satisfy both MRI specifications and to comply with Federal requirements for nuclear power [Music] plants since the measurement of laps rate is vitally important in meteorological Systems Great care care is taken to not only calibrate the therms and matching Electronics but the completed assemblies are also tested in temperature bands to assure that calibration is correct on this occasion the customer site is outside the United States thus requiring a shelter that can be trans transported by Air Freight and assembled on site prior to shipment the shelter is assembled at mri's field operations facility [Music] the air conditioner and electrical wiring are installed in the shelter and then the panels are labeled prior to disassembly and packing [Music] since the tower must be transported to the site in a similar fashion it too is checked out prior to shipment to the field and a final shipping list is prepared to ensure that all components of the system will be available when the equipment and field crew are ready to perform the installation on site an auxiliary power supply is another option which may be included in a standard meteorological system this backup generator will automatically switch on when main power failure occurs [Music] as demonstrated MRI can have a standard meteorological system installed on your site 30 days from receipt of a firm [Music] order e [Music] for years meteorology research incorporated has provided a broad variety of research and Analysis services including air quality and emission measurements this includes ambient monitoring as well as measurement of stationary sources one area of specialization is the use of MRI instrumented aircraft the aircraft used on this program is equipped with external sampling probes measurements include air temperature humidity turbulence and altitude to provide data describing ambient conditions while other instrumentation is Sim simultaneously monitoring the concentration levels of sulfur dioxide the oxides of nitrogen carbon monoxide ozone visibility and other aerosols prior to a sampling flight the aircraft is checked out and all instrumentation is zeroed and calibrated the outputs from all of the instrumentation are fed into a Data Logger and stored on magnetic I tape after each flight the data are retrieved from the tape and processed by a computer a print out of all of the information is provided in a standard format for analysis and insertion in the final report aircraft are used to determine emission concentration and the subsequent downwind diffusion either gases or particul can be monitored to define the dispers version of the [Music] plume in conjunction with Airborne sampling or separately Source monitoring is another MRI [Music] capability in this particular sequence the client is interested in the stack emissions and their impact on the local environment for such programs ground support often is provided by MRI field operations Personnel an MRI plant process vometa for parameters essential to predicting the plume [Music] opacity sampling probes are inserted in the breaching of the stack [Music] instrumentation is brought to the site to obtain the emission levels of sulfur dioxide oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide which are recorded on strip charts oxygen levels are also continuously monitored conforming to latest Environmental Protection Agency guidelines as a supplement to the objective measurements an MRI TI timelapse camera is used to provide a visual picture of the plume opacity the appearance of the plume and a meter readout from the plant process viom are recorded on 16 mm film all of this data as well as that from the MRI instrumented aircraft provide the input into a model to predict downwind opacity a standard EPA method five train is set up for measurement of particulates in the stack the impinger bottles are [Music] filled put in place and connected to the train lines connecting the probe to the control unit are attached the impinger compartment is then filled with ice [Music] the probe is inserted into the stack and sampling is begun normally the sampling continues for 2 hours during which time the stack is traversed with the necessary adjustments made to achieve isokinetic sampling this equipment is then taken to the laboratory the water vapor content is measured as required by the regulations the filter holder is removed and the filter is weighed the end result of the test is the particulate loading of the stack gas in G per cubic meter in addition to Gathering particulate loading data MRI manufactures and uses a model 1502 inertial Cascade impactor to obtain particle size distribution from 20 microns down to 3/10 of a [Music] micron the impactor consists of a series of stages which contain both jet plates where the particles are separated and collection discs where particles are impacted and thus removed from the sample successive stages remove smaller and smaller particles of a known size range these stages are easily assembled and disassembled in the laboratory or in an onsite mobile trailer on a fossil fuel fired steam generator plant the particle size distribution can often influence the design of the particulate control equipment at this site a sampling port in the stack allows the insertion of the probe mounted [Music] impactor the impactor is heated to the stack temperature before sampling is initiated the probe is connected to the control unit and sampling is begun adjustments are made during the test to assure isokinetic sampling after the probe has been operated for an appropriate period of time based on the expected loading the impactor is removed and transported back to a laboratory for analysis each of the plates is weighed on an electronic balance and the subtraction of the tear weight yields an actual collection in milligram of material prze increment the results can be verified by analyzing the sample catch by counting the [Music] particles MRI can accomplish this task using our quantum image analyzer the data from the quantimet is printed directly on paper tape for insertion into a computer MRI has computer programs for reducing either Optical or gravimetric data into standard formats for data reporting chemical analysis of the sample can also be performed whether your needs be airborne or Source particulates or gases MRI has the technical expertise and field crew to get out and collect the data on any type of installation under the most adverse conditions this is but one example of mri's investigative capabilities research instrumentation and field management for air quality [Music] programs e [Music] for centuries man has designed and arranged his surroundings for his convenience access to water and other natural resources has been a primary consideration in recent years it has become apparent that we must protect our environment as one of the key factors in future growth [Music] [Music] [Music] for preliminary studies of future Construction general climatological data is extremely important a detailed knowledge of the Winds combined with appropriate studies can assure the Builder of a successful design during the planning of large projects studies are made to provide meteorological data for later use one extremely useful instrument for this purpose is the mechanical weather station meteorology research incorporated created this field proven instrument which operates on internal power hour for 30 or 60 days unattended the mechanical weather station deres its name from the fact that each sensor is mechanically coupled to a recording mechanism through a series of Gears a knife edge on a recording scroll removes a plastic coating from pressure sensitive chart paper wind direction is shown on this scale in order to determine average wind speed for 1 hour we note the position of the trace at 1,600 it crosses the hour marking at 2 mil and the 1700 line at 8 1/2 mil by simple subtraction it is determined that 6 and 1/2 mil of wind have passed in this hour or an average of 6/2 [Music] mph temperature tempure is recorded on either of two scales -30 to + 120° f or- 90 to + 60° a simple plate and locking screw provide easy scale [Music] selection humidity data is collected with the addition of a small sensor under the B metal temperature coil it is read on the same scale as wind run with each division representing 10% another accessory which may be added is a rain [Music] gauge a heater is also available for melting Frozen precipitation water accumulates in a tipping bucket through a magnet and read switch each tip is translated into a contact closure which is recorded as a step on the chart each step is 1 100th of an inch each cycle is a [Music] tenth a solar radiation sensor may also be added with an integrator it records in the same manner as rain portable and in its own carrying case the mechanical weather station is simple to set up the field case includes the station speed and direction sensors and required tools [Music] [Applause] [Music] tripods are often used to support the station orienting is easily accomplished by aligning the site on a fixed [Music] object field maintenance of the mechanical weather station is quite simple to illustrate batteries should be changed when chart paper is changed during cold weather [Music] replacing the chart roll takes only a few moments proper procedures will assure up to 65 days of data on one roll [Music] n [Music] for more permanent installations sensors with electrical outputs can be used [Music] MRI also makes instrumentation for unusual parameters this lightning stroke counter produces pulses for external recording and an internal event [Music] recorder for monitoring and data recording M has the instrumentation whatever the climate [Music] this weather station is different from the one which we have been looking at in that it has an incremental chart Drive the incremental Drive uses a crystal countdown clock and a greatly simplified chart Drive mechanism as shown in the instructions inside the door chart paper loading is easily accomplished move the chart mechanism outward retract the hold down bar and remove the stock [Music] spool a new roll of chart paper is inserted on the stock spool snapped in place put under the hold down [Music] bar and the bar is snapped back into position the chart recorder is returned to its original position and the chart paper folded with a vshape and threaded onto the T take up spool care should be taken to see that the chart paper is centered when rolled on the takeup [Music] spool and then the takeup spool is inserted in place the recording mechanism is uncaged the temperature scribe is used as an indicator for setting the correct time this drive requires 6 volts and therefore four d-size batteries are used to power the unit two go into an extender tube and two into the station [Music] itself once in position the weather station can be turned turned on with a small switch located on the left hand side of the station the packaging of this station is slightly different from the station shown previously in that the batteries must be removed and stored in a separate compartment so that the extender tube can be tucked in place in the case the remainder of the packing is done in a conventional manner the field case is optionally provided with the [Music] station all of mri's mechanical weather stations clock driven or incremental are available in either metric or English units
