Laurence Gould describes Antarctica as the most beautiful place on earth, a continent he first saw in 1934 when he was second-in-command to Admiral Byrd in the flight across the South Pole. Since 1957 (the International Geophysical Year), the huge icebound continent has acquired a permanent population, and twelve countries now maintain scientific expeditions on the ice. Describes living conditions of personnel, and emphasizes the international spirit of cooperation that exists in Antarctica. Scientists discuss their current investigations in the fields of meteorology, biology, ecology, astronomy and geology.
