Description: Examines Monet's life and work, tracing in particular his evolving concept of light. Discusses his early works which celebrated both nature and modernity, his movement towards Impressionism, his financial and personal struggles after the fiscal failure of his patron and the death of his wife, his work at Normandy, his eventual success, and the house at Giverny which became his focus. Considers his idea of light as a tangible object and argues that Monet was a forerunner of abstract expressionism. Features Peter Ustinov reading from Monet's writings.
