Description: Produced by the BBC for the British Open University Shows the use of mathematical modelling to solve the problem of pollution in the River Thames during the 1950s when the process of decay in sewage left the river devoid of oxygen. Demonstrates how a model was made to describe the interaction between pollutant and oxygen, taking into account sewage input, river flow, diffusion, tidal movements, and absorption of oxygen through water surface.
