Description: Examines the plight of cities in four areas of the developing world, where vast influxes of rural poor are placing great demands on all forms of urban services, particularly public transportation. Government officials and transportation planners in Kenya, Brazil, India, and Thailand identify important problems encountered as population growth and rural emigration to urban areas put tremendous pressure on existing transit systems. Evaluates current solutions to these problems in terms of maintenance, cost effectiveness, and continuance.
