Mississippi River: Background for Social Studies

Tours the areas bordering the Mississippi River, pointing out geographic, economic, and recreational uses of this river system. Various activities are observed as a houseboat begins a trip down the river from Minneapolis-St. Paul to the Gulf of Mexico. Depicts the role of the Mississippi as a carrier of commerce, a water supply, a carrier of sewage, a destroyer of property, and a recreational area. Shows the locks along the river, cargoes being loaded and unloaded, and the various types of boats using the river. Maps show the area drained by the Mississippi, and the major rivers making up the river system.
