The film chronicles ambassador Davies' impressions of the Soviet Union. It is made in a faux-documentary style. The film alternates between Davies' interpretations of Russian politics and communism and his family's impressions of Russian life. Davies is shown witnessing the famous show trials conducted by Stalin in the 1930s.
