uh Mr kazoo am I right in assuming that your call is somewhat in the nature of a [Music] complaint uh you say since you added our toner your Xerox copies come out to light on Mondays and Wednesdays yes and they're too dark on Tuesdays and Thursdays um what about your Fridays well no on my Fridays I visit a sick and about the toner uh you feel the toner must be to blame Mr Kazo uh you've got to be kidding I mean well put it this way when your car's transmission breaks down you don't blame the gasoline do you yes I do indeed think your trouble could be something else uh Mr Kazo do you know what really goes on inside that Xerox cabinet every time you push the copy button I'd be glad to now I'll turn on my monitor [Music] and if you please activate your visual receiver you mean it's been on all this time that's a no no now um kindly set your orbital framis receptor at instant perception that's it now we're all set the principle of xerography and the Machinery involved in producing a xerographic copy are both quite complex but let's look inside this Xerox 720 copier for a brief and simplified explanation of how a copy is made the heart of the machine is an aluminum drum coated with selenium selenium is a highly sensitive material which in the dark is a nonconductor of electricity and will hold a positive electrostatic charge when any portion of the selenium is exposed to light it becomes a conductor and loses its electrostatic charge there are six basic steps in the production of a xerographic copy Step One is the charging of the selenium drum surface when the machine is turned on the selenium coated drum revolves constantly and an electrical element called a charging chatron imparts a positive electrostatic charge to the entire drum surface the selenium coating will retain this uniform positive charge as long as it remains in the dark next comes the scanning step when an original document is placed face down on the platin glass and the print button is pressed a set of traveling or scanning lamps throws a bright light onto the original a system of mirrors and lenses transmits this lighted image through an opening over the charged drum the exposure step begins as the scanned image strikes the Turning drum surface and the charged selenium coating reacts in its special way in areas where light is reflected from the unprinted background of the original the selenium releases its charge but in areas where the light is blocked by printing or other marking on the original such as the letter e shown here the selenium coating retains its charge in a matching pattern as a result of this exposure the drum now carries an invisible reproduction of the original document the next step is the developing of this into a visible image this housing holds developer beads which look like grains of sand and have a positive electrical charge xerographic toner which might be termed a special kind of powdered ink is slowly dispensed from the toner well and is picked up and held fast by the charge developer beads the toner is destined to become the visible image on the copy and the developer beads simply serve as Transporters or carriers of the toner an endless bucket conveyor lifts these toner covered beads letting them Cascade over the advancing selenium drum and its charged image since the charge of the image areas on the drum is stronger than that of the developer beads some of the toner is pulled from the beads and is held to the drum in what is now a visible image the developer beads fall back in the developer housing let's go over this developing step in a little more detail the toner particles have no electrical charge at all as they drop from the dispenser into the developer housing the developer carrier beads on the other hand have a built-in positive charge the action of the conveyor system causes friction between toner and carrier beads a few years ago Mother Nature passed a physical law known as the triboelectric phenomenon which states that friction between any two different substances will cause them to assume opposite electrical charges from this friction the toner receives a negative charge and the existing positive charge of the carrier beads is reinforced electrically speaking Opposites Attract and the toner now sticks tightly to the carrier bead only the stronger positive charge of the drum image areas will pull toner away from the carrier beads creating a visible black image on the drum surface our letter e image for example will now be covered with a coating of toner while the background AR area Remains uncoated the transfer step begins as a single sheet of blank paper is fed from the paper tray and passes in contact with the image area on the drum another electrical element the transfer corron applies a strong positive charge to the paper this charge stronger even than the drum's remaining charge pulls the toner off the drum and deposits it on the paper matching exactly the image on the original document our letter e is now in the form of a black toner image on the copy paper the drum has now completed its job and after being cleared of all toner residue and electrical charges by special devices it is ready for the next copy cycle in the final step called fusing and delivery the copy is passed under a heating unit the heater elements melt the toner and fuse it to the paper creating a permanently bonded image the finished copy is transported by rollers to the receiving tray to complete the xerographic cycle these six key steps are repeated every time a xerographic copy is produced whether one copy or a thousand are required with each cycle the machine must charge scan expose develop transfer fuse and deliver the finished copy Xerox equipment is complex in operation it's like an electronic happening and to assure top quality copies every time regular maintenance is required by your key operator and by the zero serviceman the toner used in
