Description: Reviews metamorphosis and cites some examples highlighting hormonal control of the processes. Demonstrates the control of the thyroid gland on metamorphosis of the frog. Traces cecropia moth development through live-action, close-up photography and then shows how, experimentally, larval and pupal development may be controlled. Discriminates between stimulatory and inhibitory glands and explains future possible use of hormones as insecticides. Concludes that developmental events are controlled by a complex system of endocrine glands, which in metamorphosis cause both gains and losses in structures until the animal reaches adulthood.
