Description: Studies the hydrolysis of an organic ester. Shows the discovery of a reaction mechanism, or the steps of a reaction, involves the chemical dquation, the structures of the reactants and the products, the fate of each atom of the reactants, and the structures of the intermediate molecules., Demonstrates, through the study of hydrolysis of an organic ester, the step-by-step procedure in the discovery of a reaction mechanism. The steps include the determination of (1) the chemical equation, (2) the structures of the reactants and the products, (3) the fate of each atom of the reactants, and (4) the structures of the intermediate molecules. Identifies two reactants--sodium hydroxide and methyl benzoate. Mixes them and then isolates the products benzoic acid and methanol by distillation. Explores the path of each atom involved and checks the suggested mechanism against known bond polarities.
