What distinction should be made between folk culture and popular culture? Do the people in control of our means of culture purposely keep the levels low? Have the cultural media tried to raise the level? What is the state of the artist today? How does the desire to make money affect the quality of creative work? Will giving the artist more freedom uplift our cultural standards? Can a popular culture be “creative?” Does low taste have a place in our society?
