Description: Perhaps the original need for masks was for man to be able to disengage himself from his everyday life. He used them to symbolize that he was not “himself.” He was another being, human or superhuman, or even an abstract quality. He was able to satisfy two needs through the use of masks – the need for religion and the need for diversion. Miss Leadbeater and Shari Lewis concentrate on masks used for diversion and their counterparts in the modern United States – at Halloween and Mardi Gras.
