A series of stills of impressionist paintings with voice over. Portrays the life of Mary Cassatt, an early American Impressionist from Philadelphia. Reveals her personal story, her years in Paris, her relationship with Degas, the influence of her prominent Philadelphia family and the places where she painted and lived. Discloses that she hated conventional art, was influenced by Japanese techniques and only began to paint seriously when Degas invited her to show her works with other Impressionists. Illustrates a selection of her paintings, drawings and prints.
