Blends archival footage, still pictures, and commentary by New York Times correspondent Harrison Salisbury to document the rule of Mao Tse-tung from the formation of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, to his death in 1976. Recounts how, out of chaos, Mao created order, and transformed 600 million weak, illiterate, family-centered peasants into strong, loyal, disciplined Communists. Discusses the elimination of the enemies of the socialist state, renunciation of the past, regimentation of the peasants, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and relations with the United States and the Soviet Union.
