[Music] la [Music] [Applause] [Music] she hates to get ready for school and so does her brother Manuel loso late to the school Pap I don't want to go to school Manuel is homesick for Puerto Rico but they had to come here so Papa could get a better job so Mama could find work too now now Papa dway M inold outside Manuel is not used to Winter he does not like the city I want to go back to Puerto Rico because I want to go play with my cousin no I'm sorry papa wants the family to like New York but living here is so different from Puerto Rico for a long time you know I got a good job in here Manu wears the house key all day long because he gets home before mama and papa the children must come straight home from school Mama thinks the strange new city is dangerous she's afraid someone will hurt the children if they play on the [Music] streets in class Manuel is always quiet he has no friends Mr fman the teacher knows how important it is for Manuel to make friends in new places like New York I I don't see Manuel likes Mr fman he is very nice but some of the boys really give him trouble all right okay let's cut this out right now enough Harry sit down boys sit all right I want to tell you about a special assignment that you're going to have for next Monday you're going to have to write a composition about a job that you think you might want to have when you get older and I want you to think about the training that you may have to go through to get this kind of a job I want you to think very carefully about this assignment before you do it you have a few days left and I expect you [Music] to he wants to be back in Puerto Rico maybe they were very poor there maybe Papa couldn't get a good job but at least Manu had friends like his cousins Juan and we the three of them always play together and he misses is and Rosa and Grandpa and Grandma ju and Manuel used to take care of the pigs together but now one does it by himself when the pigs grow big enough the boy's uncles cook them Juan and Manuel never like that very much but they eat the pigs and the bananas too that grow right in Grandpa's patio Everything grows easy in Puerto Rico it's always nice and [Music] warm in their Village everybody knows everybody else and at school Everybody Plays together Manuel better stop they dreaming and pay attention I guess Manuel is becoming bored with my lesson oh no Manuel I didn't ask you to come to the board I asked if you were bored b o r e d not interested sit down he just doesn't understand much English is he embarrassed quiet down you know boys and girls there are many different words in the English language that's sound alike and now about that assignment I want you to prepare reports about jobs that people have in the city especially ones that you think you might want to have someday if you'd like to work in teams I'll allow you to do that hey why don't we let M well be in our team okay M well would you want to be in our team now that school is out what can we do for a competition Roberto has an idea we could go over to my house and plan for the about going over to his house yeah M are you ready to go home come on M well aren you coming to my house remember what mama said about coming home after school for goodness sake you will be there all night Manuel knows he should go straight home but instead he's going with his new friends he knows his parents don't want him to walk around his new neighborhood without [Music] them l Manuel went to places like this but only with his parents Manuel likes L Mara so many things to see some new things and some that remind him of Puerto Rico [Music] oh [Music] [Music] what kind of job does your father does my father has a good job you know what he do what what he drives the sway what he he works he B these hats and things like that in the factory down to and these hats are little babies I don't W it all that my father Works in this Hospital you know where they have to clean the men and everything then he has to take them a b at this place you know in W Island he gets pay $151 every weeks now he's going to work at night because they're changing his job my father my father he gets a lot of money I don't know how much but it's pretty nice it's a very good job but I don't like it I wish I I want to work in the store because it's was fun cuz I like ad my father has a nice job what kind is it he drives the train he's a motor man when I grow up I like to be a c construction worker building buildings 100 stor TI and then skyscrapers and then big long beans that you could walk on that'll be great yeah it will but only thing what if you fall yeah yeah you die I think they said that you got to take good good training to do that would it be nice to go down town and see the skyscrapers and it' be good for a compeition too would you like to go je that be fun I I think I like to go hey on Saturday Okay Saturday I think my mother and my father wouldn't let me go boys L got to go home ask the parents if you can go okay no no I want to go with Roberto right now can't go because you came home L but I want to go to building the building now Manuel we have to tell the bad news to the boys and Mr fedman I can't go my father will let me go if only Mr fredman could help suppose I pay your parents a visit tonight I bet I could talk to the wedding you go do you really think you could [Music] [Music] downtown there's so much to see and do so many different people doing so many different jobs this must be why Papa wanted to come to New York [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Manuel will have many stories to tell at home when you have friends it can really be fun to explore the city today Manuel doesn't feel so much like a stranger now he has friends maybe someday he would like to live in the big city hi Mr Freeman Mr hi boys how you doing finally get downtown yeah and we saw the tck ball and the helicopter how many of those jobs do you think you could all I could be a helicopter pilot oh yeah yeah come on [Music]
