Sir Roger Balfour's death is officially declared a suicide by Inspector Edward C. Burke of Scotland Yard. Five years later, with the case still unresolved, a sinister-looking man with pointed teeth wearing a Beaver-skin top hat, arrives at the household with a cadaverous-looking woman in a long gown. The arrival of these two individuals prompts the arrival of Sir James Hamlin, the friend and neighbour of the deceased, to call Scotland Yard to investigate.
