its assembly lines this is the Palmdale Jet Fighter final assembly [Music] plan the shape and character of tomorrow's aircraft and space Vehicles may be decided at this new multi-million doll research center near sagus this was locked in the 20s when a handful of men were building planes for aviation's immortals Aila aart Wy post the Lindberg art Goble Howard Hughes Kingsford Smith and Captain Frank Hawks aviations Pioneers wrote history with those early locked planes this was locki during World War II when employment skyrocketed to 94,000 and Hudson bombers b7s and p38s were being built by the [Music] thousands this is locked California today dedicated above all else to finding the answers to tomorrow's perplexing Space Age [Applause] problems you have just witnessed a takeoff of the new P3 V1 Orion presently being produced in quantity for the United States Navy it represents the latest in the state-ofthe-art in anti-submarine Warfare aircraft [Music] the P3 V1 is air to more than two decades of Lockheed ASW aircraft experience during World War II lock built more than 3,000 Hudson bombers for Great Britain Canada Australia and the United States for Convoy protection from the ubo from 1942 through 1945 it built, 1600 p pv1 Venturas and 550 followon pv2 harpoons for the Navy for anti-submarine patrol Duty the p2v one Neptune followed it was the first US landbased plane to be designed solely as a sub [Music] Hunter Workhorse of the Navy ASW squadrons the Neptune since 1946 has advanced through seven different models still in production at Burbank more than 1,000 aircraft of the Neptune series have been built for the US Navy and nine free world Nations today however as potential enemy submarine fleets grow at an alarming rate and the destructive power of nuclear underwater craft is realistically appraised lockheed's anti-submarine Marine Warfare and ocean systems organization is facing up to New Challenges challenges that take it into research areas far a field from the airframe business Lock's floating ASW laboratory and basic research vessel the SE Quest is equipped for probing the mysteries of the sea is employed in a Relentless search for the answers to problems of underwater detection and weapons control the sequ is instrumented for a wide range of oceanographic research including studies of internal waves deep sea nekon and submarine slope stability measurement of horizontal Shear investigation of bubble noise magnetic background surveys recordings were made of underwater noises made by whales sea lions and other mammals listen to these [Applause] [Applause] underwater creatures utter noises that create false targets for sonar by identifying and cataloging their individual sounds Lockheed can make easier the task of both shipboard and airborn sonar operators in spotting elusive enemy submarines thermocline the temperature gradient of layers of water is being studied this also has a bearing on the effectiveness of Submarine detection gear extensive research is being conducted in Marine Biology porpuses highly intelligent having natural built-in sonar and apparently capable of communicating may offer Clues to underwater detection perhaps even be used as Scouts a study is being made for the Navy of the relationships between aerodynamics and hydrodynamics upwards of a 100 tests have been run with this hydrofoil research CR [Music] studies also are being made with this locki designed winged Hull wings of this Speedy craft fold when it is out of the [Music] water locked is conducting research for the Navy in many areas that for security reasons cannot be revealed this work is part of lockheed's unceasing effort to improve its capabilities in ocean systems and anti-submarine warfare it has helped to make the P3 V1 Orion the longest reaching hardest hitting submarine hunter in aviation history the P3 V1 will fly farther faster and flush out its quarry with a sharper electronic eye than any other airplane its wasp-like tail extension houses mag magnetic anomaly detection equipment its electronic eyes and ears include radar scanners whose Horizon to Horizon running reports are integrated in a single tactical brain compartment once over the target area the P3 V1 can fly with perfect controllability at speeds of less than 175 mph for sea level searches submarine hunting is a hurry up and wait job for watchful waiting at low altitude its two Outboard propellers can be feathered to increase search time in defending the Free World sea Lanes from enemy submarines the P3 V1 can attack with Conventional Weapons or ballistic missiles [Applause] the P3 V1 is appropriately named for Orion of Greek mythology who was known as a great hunter of Mighty strength research The NeverEnding quest for better ways to do a job and and for better weapons with which to do it led to the Advanced Air superiority f104 super star [Music] fighter quickly after it became operational with the Air Force in 1958 the f104 established itself as the world's fastest highest flying aircraft setting speed altitude and time to climb [Music] records for its specialized Air Defense command assignment as a superior performance fighter Interceptor the f-104a is unsurpassed the f104c assigned to the Tactical Air Command demonstrated its capability in yet another field as a top tactical Fighter for tax global air strike forces f104s proved that they could be moved in numbers quickly and for long distances even under adverse weather conditions to do a job when free world nations in order to be able to defend their borders from enemy attack went shopping in the world market for multiple Mission versatility in a single aircraft locki developed the new highly sophisticated f104 Superstar fighter to meet their needs the Superstar fighter has the capability to do any one of a number of tactically unrelated missions and to excel in all it can perform as a fighter [Music] bomber and is particularly Adept on dive bombing missions [Music] [Applause] it is a versatile all weather fighter Interceptor and can furnish powerful ground support it can achieve pinpoint accuracy on strafing assignments and its versatility makes it readily adaptable for low altitude photo reconnaissance mission it can carry a wide variety of external Armament store combinations and four side Winder missiles two on the wing tips and two beneath the fuselage belly it can easily be refueled in the air for longer range the Superstar Fighters infrared Gun Site multiple purpose radar bomb computer and dead reckoning Navigator make it one of the world's most sophisticated aerial [Applause] weapons today Advanced versions of the f104 are in production in Europe the Far East and Canada Canada as well as at Burbank and Palmdale they are being produced under license to re-equip the air arms of Germany the Netherlands Belgium Italy Japan and Canada the international production complex is the most Monumental undertaking of its kind in aviation history Partners in it number many of the world's leading airframe manufacturers Messer Schmid bker Sab cairy Fiat Mitsubishi and Canadair operations at Burbank and Palmdale are the Hub of the complex additional quantities of f104s are being built for other friendly Nations under the mutual assistance program the f104 program is a dramatic story of LED's shield against aggression over half the [Music] globe LED traditionally has been a leader in jet aircraft launched the jet age with the f80 shooting star built more than 5,000 t33 jet trainers the popular t- bird known around the world it built the f94 series of fighter [Music] interceptors and the t2 V1 sear trainer for the Navy locki vice president Clarence Johnson designed and supervised in radar early warning Sentry aircraft built this Flying Saucer as a test bed for the Navy locki built Navy W2s and Air Force RC 121s still Patrol the ocean approaches to the North American continent guarding against enemy [Music] attack much of lockheed's research is channeled into studies of advanced transports since 1932 when the original Electra the company's first all metal airplane was built the locked name has loomed large in the transport field this passenger Model 12 was a smaller version of the Electra in 1937 locked built the model 14 super Electra and followed it in 1939 with the even larger model 18 loadstar many of these early planes still are in service as executive [Music] transports today while locki built transports constellations super constellations starliners and propjet electras carry a sizable percentage of the world's air Travelers Lockheed Engineers are designing planes for new transport missions exploring new transport Concepts short Hall air buses vertical Rising commuter [Music] transports and helicopters locked has been testing this prototype for more than 2 years while conventional in appearance it represents a technical breakthrough in vertical Rising aircraft designed primarily for military use it is readily adaptable as a commercial transport carrying varying numbers of passengers [Music] supersonic transports have held an important place in lockheed's thinking for the past several years extensive wind tunnel tests of many Design Concepts have been conducted when the demand exists for such a transport Lockheed stands ready to build an airliner that will travel at speeds in excess of Mach II at an altitude of 75,000 ft Lockheed California is pressing forward in missiles and spacecraft in this environmental space chamber Lockheed scientists are reproducing conditions found more than 435 Mi above the Earth near vacuum atmospheres can be achieved radiant energy approximates the sun Spectrum temperatures can drop to minus 320° [Music] F considerable work has been done on a space Ferry half airplane half spaceship designed to shuttle men and materials between Earth and outer space for construction and organization during the past year has devoted more than 50,000 engineering manh hours to research on Space hardware for lunar Landings sometime in the latter part of this decade when a spacecraft
