Description: This short film "Making Watches" was part of an educational series called "Let's Talk About", which was created to fill time during gaps in children's TV programming and for use in schools. It was produced by Richard B. Morros in 1961. The film shows the manufacture of Bulova Accutron wristwatches, including making of bridge plates (:56) by automatic machinery. At (1:03), pinion leaf cutters -- tiny lathes producing gears -- are shown. Women are shown at work because, according to the narrator, "they are more dextrous at handling tiny things." The gears move on an oil flow which functions as a conveyor belt. At (1:54), pinion gears are shown. At (2:09), a watchmaker assembles a watch and tests them (2:23) against U.S. Naval Observatory time. At (2:37) watches are dunked to make sure they are waterproof. At (2:55) the tuning forks of the electronic watches are tested -- 360 cycles per second. "These watches represent man's progress from sun dials and water clocks to the newest electronic marvel." Producer Richard B. Morros started a trend in producing short content, by making a series of newsreel shorts called "Almanac" which were distributed by Official Films. The "Let's Talk About" series debuted in 1960 with a pilot showing operations on a duck farm. Geared at young audiences, the films were distributed in schools and syndicated TV, and there was a book tie-in. At the time this film was made the Accutron was brand new. Bulova's "Accutron" watches, first sold in October 1960, use a 360 Hz tuning fork instead of a balance wheel as the timekeeping element. It was invented by Max Hetzel, who joined the Bulova in 1950. The tuning fork was powered by a one-transistor electronic oscillator circuit, so the Accutron qualifies as the second "electronic watch", following the Hamilton Electric released in 1957. Instead of the ticking sound made by mechanical watches, the Accutron had a faint, high-pitched hum which came from the vibrating tuning fork. The Accutron was guaranteed to be accurate to one minute per month, or two seconds per day, considerably better than mechanical watches of the time.

foreign [Music] [Applause] of today's newest watch an electronic marble that hums as it works today's watch Factory is full of drilling machines that work with great Precision punching and drilling holes as fine as a thousandth of an inch then pinion gears or tiny jeweled bearings will be set in the holes these machines are much more exact than handwork can possibly be in addition they never Tire or go to the water cooler and never ask the boss for a raise these are bridge plates in which pinion gears will be set the plate is the foundation holding spinning gears as the Earth underfoot holds a spinning top here are pinion Leaf Cutters really no more than the tiniest leaves producing gears some barely visible to the naked eye although watchmakers are men traditionally women do most of the work here the well-known reason is that they are more dexterous in handling tiny things the smallest gears are floated in an oil bath down the assembly line that ensures no loss on a mechanical conveyor belt [Music] oil is also used as a lubricant in the grinding process [Music] these are pinion gears the axes around which the world of Gears turns in its watch case here on the left you see them greatly magnified the assembler is a trained and talented person intricately machined parts are mounted on the bridge plate then synthetic Jewels are put into at least 17 points of greatest wear the finest watches run on the greatest number of jeweled bearings here you see that women are the assemblers used because of their ability to perform delicate hand tests now they are time tested against a clock run on United States Naval Observatory time watches must be dumped to make sure they're waterproof I don't think you should take them swimming at the beach but some people are absent-minded the large clock works on Naval Observatory time controlled by a beep from Washington here a special device tests the tuning Forks which are the vibrating hearts of electronic watches this machine like a radar scope counts the exact pulses of the tiny tuning Forks 360 cycles per second run by a battery no larger than a shirt color button these watches represent man's progress from sundials and water clocks to the newest electronic marble clocks with the ticking Hearts we knew so well are giving way to the humming watches of future Generations [Music] thank you
