Description: This lyric opera is set against the bohemian life of two impoverished artists both in love with a ballerina. In Clair's stylized comedy, the artist, Michel, heavily in debt, wins a million florins in the lottery. While Michel tries to evade his creditors, a master criminal Pere La Tulipe, leads a detachment of police into the protagonist's building in a a parallel elusive effort. To add to the mounting disorder, Michel's girlfriend, Beatrice, unwittingly gives la Tulipe Michel's old jacket as a disguise, without realizing that it contains the winning ticket. The madcap search for the ticket ends at the opera with everyone desperately trying to recapture the prize. Clair's experiments with film sound proved influential on later screen musicals.(Does not circulate)
