Recently I've been doing some video transfer work for the Larry Himmel Foundation of old master tapes of Larry's 1980s TV show "San Diego At Large." This legendary (well, to San Diego geeks, anyway) low-budget nightly show was a chaotic mix of amateur comedy and local human-interest type stories. Larry & the gang had to come up with 1/2 hour of TV every night, so they ended up doing all sorts of random stuff. One recurring segment was called "Torture Test," where folks would send in stuff for Larry to destroy in some creative way. These days this sort of thing is a whole genre on YouTube, so I guess Larry was ahead of the curve. Anyway, I was about 14 or 15 when I sent in this bag of rock candy that was left at my house by my grade school friend Mike Oing. I guess I used my real name "Dan" because I figured it was TV and therefore...?
