Description: Teaching Film Custodians abridged classroom version of a pictorial history of the United States originally prepared for exhibition at the 1939 New York World's Fair and 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco. The film is composed of sequences taken from many historical motion pictures and edited into a complete story of the colonization of America, the establishment of the Republic, and its subsequent history. Part 1 - After 150 years of self-governing experience, the American colonies unite to declare their independence of Great Britain after repeated infringements of their rights, and successfully wage the Revolutionary War. Following the war, weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation threaten the nation's survival. Washington presides at the Convention of 1787 which adopts the Constitution, which is amended by the Bill of Rights in 1789. The new Republic shows its strength as its Navy defeats the pirates of Tripoli and begins its westward expansion with the purchase of Louisiana Territory in 1803.
