Summary: For the second year in a row, UCLA dental students will participate in the Indian Dental Clinic Project. Dental equipment is being loaded into a moving truck at the UCLA Medical Center to be shipped to Whiteriver, Arizona, the home of the Fort Apache Reservation. A group of 100 dental students will set up a clinic to help address the dental needs of the White Mountain Apache Indians. Last year, they focused on making dentures for older adults, but this time they intend to focus on treating the kids, and offering oral hygiene programs to educate them. Stan Chambers interviews Don Rowland and Mark Lisagor, the co-chairmen of the project, about how the project got started, who is involved, and the services they plan to offer. Footage includes shots of the moving truck and different pieces of large dental equipment, such as exam chairs, being loaded on the truck.

[Ambient noise] [Ambient noise, loading equipment] [KTLA Reporter, Stan Chambers] Dental equipment was loaded into a moving truck this morning at the UCLA Medical Center. [Chambers] It's being shipped to the White Mountain Apache Indians in White River, Arizona. Home of the Fort Apache Reservation. [Chambers] This is the second straight year UCLA dental students have participated in the Indian Dental Clinic Project. [Chambers] Don Rowland and Mark Lisagor are co-chairmen. [Mark Lisagor] Ah, last year we made dentures for older Apaches. This year we'll be doing that. [Lisagor] We'll also be doing a full range of dental services. [Lisagor] Aiming more toward treating the kids this year. [Lisagor] Oral hygiene programs. Dental education. As well as last year's program. [Chambers] What was the comment of those who participated last year after that long hot summer? [Lisagor] Oh you mean the students? I think they all walked away feeling pretty good. [Lisagor] They, ah, enjoyed the experience they, they liked, getting a chance to get involved with a different culture than our own. And of course they got a good feeling seeing some people smile, who hadn't smiled in a long time, for lack of teeth. [Chambers] The dental students provide the equipment, operate the clinic at their own expense, and on their own time. Stan Chambers reporting from UCLA in Westwood. [Ambient noise, loading equipment] [Voice] I built [unintelligible] [Ambient noise, loading equipment] [Chambers] How did this project get started? [Don Rowland] Well, two summers ago one of our senior students was in the National Health Manpower Project, [Rowland] and visited the Apache Reservation in Eastern, Arizona. [Rowland] He saw the need for dental care and the fact that the Apaches got very little dental care on the reservation. [Rowland] He came back here and elicited support among the students and started the project which the first project was last year. [Rowland] Now this year, because of the great success of last year's project, we're continuing it on. And, in fact, expanding it. [Chambers] About how many will be participating? [Rowland] It'll be over a hundred dental students plus close to another hundred people in auxiliary capacities. Dental assistants. Dental technicians. Our wives in the cafeteria, and so on. [Chambers] How long will you be down there? [Lisagor] Most of the summer. A total of about eleven weeks. [Chambers] And what will you be doing?
