The KTLA newsfilm collection at UCLA consists of cut and unedited stories, outtakes and fill footage, originally shot on 16mm reversal film stock with magnetic soundtrack. Some footage, particularly material not used for broadcast, may be without sound.
Title: "Teamsters boycott of United Farm Workers lettuce." Date: February 8, 1971.
Summary: In September of 1970, United Farm Workers asked consumers to boycott all head lettuce that had not been picked by members of the UFW. This was an attempt to put pressure on the major lettuce growers to recognize the UFW as the bargaining unit for farm workers. Here, a reporter covers the Teamsters boycott of United Farm Workers lettuce enacted as a response to the UFW boycott hurting sales of Teamsters lettuce. Under orders from Teamsters Local 630, workers ranging from produce drivers to market clerks refuse to handle any lettuce with the UFW logo. Silent footage includes shots of delivery trucks, boxes of lettuce and other produce, and workers moving boxes. Also included is the reporter's voiceover narration contextualizing the boycott and the silent footage seen after the voiceover concludes. The voiceover segment is sound only.

[Reporter John Marshall] Each day between midnight and 6AM several thousand cartons of lettuce pass through the downtown produce market. Until now, some of his lettuce bore the Eagle label of Cesar Chavez United Farm Workers Union. But no effort was made to deliver such lettuce this morning because beginning today all fruit and produce drivers, warehouse men and clerks at the market refused to handle the Eagle label lettuce on orders from their union- Teamsters Local 630. Teamsters officials say they have taken this action because of United Farm Workers efforts to start a boycott against lettuce packed and shipped by the teamsters. The UFW in recent months has launched a picketing campaign as well as a letter-writing effort to chain store executives demanding that they sell only lettuce packed by the UFW workers. The Teamsters Union did say it regrets this new move but the policy will continue as long as Cesar Chavez and the farm union try to hurt the sale of teamsters lettuce. John Marshall...Channel 5 News...reporting. [Silence].
