[KTLA Reporter Dick Garten] There was more evidence today of the growing support for Cesar Chavez, [Garten] the farm labor leader who was jailed for refusing to end a boycott against a lettuce grower, [Garten] whose employees he is attempting to organize. [Garten] A noon hour rally and cafeteria boycott at the San Fernando Valley State College, [Garten] attracted about one hundred students, in spite of threatening weather, [Garten] and featured speeches by one of the college professors, a farm worker and a member of the organizing committee. [Garten] Chavez, who seeks to bargain for all field hands, in the agriculturally rich Salinas Valley, [Garten] was jailed last Friday. [Garten] And his followers say he will stay in the Monterey County jail until a contract is signed with the produce firm of Bud Antel Incorporated. [Garten] Chavez also refuses to rescind his order to boycott Antel lettuce, [Garten] which is understood to be the sole reason for his jailing. [Garten] Antel Incorporated is resisting pressure from politicians and other labor leaders, [Garten] to negotiate with United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, [Garten] and will honor a ten year contract it has with the Teamsters Union, [Garten] which Chavez charges is a sweetheart contract designed to keep out the United Farm Workers. [Garten] Rallies such as this supporting the boycott of lettuce by Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, [Garten] will be held in New York and San Francisco over the weekend.
